![]() To this day, they remain a touchstone for understanding the Constitution. As a result, some of the essays appeared in book form even before they appeared in the press. The essays were originally published in the New York press between Octoand August 13, 1788, but from the beginning, Hamilton planned to have them printed in book form, which he did in March and May of 1788. The Federalist has become the most famous of these pro-Constitution writings. In other words, these writers claimed, the Constitution actually created the kind of government sought by its critics. Defenders of the Constitution began writing in support of the Constitution, arguing that the Constitution created a stronger central government than existed under the Article of Confederation - and for good reason - but also that the new Constitution’s government was still carefully limited by federalism and the separation of powers. Many feared that the proposed Constitution created too strong of a central government. Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis (pronounced NEE-vus), a British-ruled island in the Caribbean Sea, around 1757. ![]() The Federalist was written in order to convince New Yorkers and Americans generally that they should ratify, or give formal consent to, the Constitution, making it officially valid. ![]()
